Wandering Spirits

In 2024 the A4 Residency Art Center invited us for a working period in Chengdu. When we arrived in Chengdu in July 2024, we had no preconceived ideas for what kind of sculptural figures we were going to make. We visited the city’s many markets and saw countless colourful fabrics and fantastic objects. During the 10 weeks of our residency we created four new works and performed 14 times on different locations throughout Chengdu.

Wandering Spirits 游魂
a performance by Guda Koster & Frans van Tartwijk, Chengdu, 2024
The two figures in bright yellow and orange were made from strings of artificial flowers, bought at He Hua Chi market. The heads added a more grotesque and strange aspect, as if they are characters from a Japanese Anime film, that are both cute and scary. It is said that wandering spirits wander aimlessly through the world, but are neither friendly nor unfriendly. The two figures appeared in Yulin and Hong Shi Park. They moved simultaneously, following a rhythm of five steps forward and three steps backward.
